Everex delays CloudBook until late February

January 27th, 2008 | Category: Laptop,News,Tech Talk,UMPC,linux

Everex CloudBook

The Eee PC from Asus has been out for a little while now, and it’s a bit surprising that we really haven’t seen any competitors hit the market yet. Sure, we’ve heard some announcements from Gigabyte and Acer, but those won’t be out for a little while. The first one that we’ll likely see is the CloudBook from Everex which should have made its debut this past week. Unfortunately, it has been delayed.

If you’re not familiar with the CloudBook, it will have a 7-inch screen, 30GB hard drive and run gOS Rocket as its operating system. With the larger hard drive, it has the ability to appeal to a larger crowd, as Windows could be installed much more easily (though Everex has no plans to offer it preinstalled). It will only weigh around two pounds and should give you around five hours of battery life.

The tiny Eee PC competitor has been pushed back to late February with the blame being placed on “the OS being refined.” The new February release date should still make it one of the first Eee PC competitors to hit the market. I guess that it just gives Asus a little more time to polish their crown.

Sony announces new Blu-ray module, should drive down costs.

January 25th, 2008 | Category: News,Tech Talk

Sony has announced the development of a new Blu-ray reader / writer module that is not only smaller than previous components, but promises to be cheaper as well due to a simplified manufacturing process. The new laser housing is less than three millimeters thick, according to the Japanese manufacturer and co-developer Nichia Corporation, enabling it to be incorporated into smaller devices such as portable players. Sony predicts that we’ll first start seeing 9.5-millimeter laptop BD drives which employ the module later this year.

Dose this support the rumor that sony is going to revamp its hardware and make a new-ish PS3?

I hope so.

Everex’s Cloudbook postponed. Dark is sad.

January 25th, 2008 | Category: Laptop,News,Tech Talk,linux

Remember how we told you Everex’s little gOS-sporting Cloudbook was headed to Wal-Mart this month (today, to be specific)? Well hold your check book, friend-o — they ain’t done with it. According to the company’s director of marketing, Paul Kim, the system requires, “A couple of last minute software tweaks,” before it’s ready for prime-time. There’s no word on when it will make an appearance, though we’re inclined to think this won’t be a major delay, though you never know. Should shipments alight, we’ll be the first to share the good news.

Eee PC with Windows launches in Japan, U.S. is next!

January 25th, 2008 | Category: Laptop,News,Tech Talk

Asus launched the first Windows version of its popular Eee PC in Japan on Thursday, according to a report in The Register.

Called the Eee PC 4G-X, it will come pre-loaded with Windows XP Home Edition. It has the same specs as the original 4G model with Linux introduced last fall: 4GB of storage, Intel Celeron processor, 512MB of RAM, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, and more.

The Japanese launch is good news for potential U.S. buyers of the computer, a cross between an oversized Internet tablet and a notebook, because it means the U.S. version is coming very soon.

Asus originally promised we’d have the Windows version of the tiny Asus Eee PC in December. The Taiwan-based company now says we can expect it in late February or early March. Though the original date came and went, it certainly hasn’t stopped customers from ordering the Linux-based version: the company reportedly moved 350,000 units in the first quarter it was available.

Well folks — it’s official. The Everex / Packard Bell / FIC Nanobook / Cloudbook / CE260 (phew) that we recently got some face time with is actually coming Stateside… to Wal-Mart. That’s right, the Eee crown-threatener will be available on January 25th of this year, featuring a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 30GB hard drive, and a 800 x 480 display for the extra-affordable price of $399. The system will be sporting Everex’s gOS Rocket, the Google-ified version of Ubuntu which powers the company’s cheapo desktop. Watch your back, front, and sides, ASUS.

HowTo: Install TeamSpeak on Asus EeePc

January 09th, 2008 | Category: Laptop,Pc Mods,linux

Ok well you all know me [Tracker] and you know that I have to have teamspeak where ever I go. Well the EeePc has a built in mic and teamspeak makes a client for linux so I thought that this should not be that hard. Well I soon found out that I was wrong. As it turns out TeamSpeak did not want to get along with my new “HackTop” and would not install at all using the installer. So I wrote up this post so that anyone that is having a problem with this can fix it :D

*Note* This is under linux only
