What would Da Vinci do if he were a mythbuster? [Lots of paintball guns!]

August 29th, 2008 | Category: News,Tech Talk

The video above shows the mythbusters [Adam and Jamie] having fun with there over elaboriate paint ball guns. The first picture made was using only 1 paint ball gun. The 2nd however used over 2100. What they were trying to show kind of failed but it was still kool!

Well, this really is awfully misleading, but it sure is awesome. The idea is that a normal CPU processes things one at a time, like the single-paintball robot, and a GPU has parallel processors that can do (in this case) 2100 times the work in a single stroke.

Epic Fail: The ISS gets infected with a virus

August 28th, 2008 | Category: Laptop,News,Tech Talk

Ok well the good news comes when I am trying to move [Yes I am moving to a new house]

But it would appear that the International Space Station has a problem…One of the space monkeys on board brought there laptop and this would normally not be a  problem but this laptop had a virus on it. The virus has spread to other laptops but according to NASA it has not effected there main system. The virus itself the ” Gammima.AG worm” is suppose to collect some data and send it back home. Who knows for sure where it came from. [Astronaut porn?] NASA tried to play this one down saying “Oh it happens all the time”. If it happens all the time why not make sure they have some Anti Virus?

Anyway here is the source post from Gizmodo

The ISS is full of laptops, used for experiments, email, or just watching movie rips on VCDs in 2001. But this time, someone’s laptop has managed to make it all the way up into Earth orbit carrying the Gammima.AG worm—one that leeches login data for Asian MMORPGs. We’re doomed!

The ISS doesn’t have a full-time net connection, but astronauts can send email periodically through the Ku-band main data link. NASA reassures us that any virus found on an astronaut’s laptop has little chance of compromising any of the station’s main systems. But it did manage to spread to more than one laptop once onboard the station, either via machine-to-machine networks or thumb drives—so it’s not a crazy assumption to make.
NASA further downplayed the story to the folks at Threat Level, saying this kind of thing happens “all the time.” But still, whoever the fuck-up is that wrote this virus is now collecting massive, massive LOLZ in whichever basement he is currently calling home.

Cube computing! – So cute and small :P

August 27th, 2008 | Category: Tech Talk

See that little square in the picture? That is a computer. It is a 2 inch by 2 inch by 2 inch cube named the “Space Cube” As you would guess the specs on this little thing are not that much.

Processor: 300mhz

Ram: 64MB

Storage: 1gb ssd

OS: Red Hat Linux (custom made to run on this thing I am sure)

It also has a wide range of ports including USB a VGA eathernet port compact flash audio out and in ports as well as a Space Wire port [for its target market NASA and the European Space Agency]

Ya I know this thing may not pack that much power but in its size I think it has a fair amount of power. I say throw another nic card on it [usb?] some smoothwall and you have yourself a decent firewall :D

No one knows a release date for this or the price but it was origonally set to sell for $325. Now it is looking like they are going to sell it for over $2,700. $325 I would THINK about getting one. But $2,700 I can get a firewall and one hell of a gaming rig :D

Slow day..so here is a joke

August 26th, 2008 | Category: Joke

Sorry guys and gals it was a slow news day…So here is another joke that came through my inbox of spam chain mail jokes and viagra offers :P

Girl Potato and Boy Potato had eyes for each other, and finally they  got married, and had a little sweet potato, which they called ‘Yam.’
Of course, they wanted the best for Yam
When it was time, they told her about the facts of life.
They warned her about going out and getting half-baked, so she
wouldn’t get accidentally mashed, and get a bad name for herself like
‘Hot Potato,’ and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots.
Yam said not to worry, no Spud would get her into the sack and make a rotten potato out of her!
But on the other hand she wouldn’t stay home and become a Couch Potato either.
She would get plenty of exercise so as not to be skinny like her Shoestring cousins.
When she went off to Europe, Mr and Mrs. Potato told Yam to watch out
for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland .
And the greasy guys from France called the French Fries. And when she
went out west, to watch out for the Indians so she wouldn’t get scalloped.
Yam said she would stay on the straight and narrow and wouldn’t
associate with those high class Yukon Golds, or the ones from the
other side of the tracks who advertise their trade on all the trucks
that say, ‘Frito Lay.’
Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho P.U. (that’s Potato University )
so that when she graduated she’d really be in the Chips.
But in spite of all they did for her, one-day Yam came home and
announced she was going to marry Tom Brokaw.
Tom Brokaw!
Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset.
They told Yam she couldn’t possibly marry Tom Brokaw because he’s
just……
Are you ready for this?
Are you sure?
OK! Here it is!
A ” COMMONTATER!!”

lol get it? If not oh well sorry

Got a good joke or some news you would like to see on this site? Email it to tracker@themodshop.net and I will see what can be done to put it up here :D

Reverse engineering game – For the geeks among us

August 25th, 2008 | Category: Joke,UMPC,linux

Well thanks to Hackaday I found this interesting and in my own opinion quite fun game. Its called Ruckingenur II [2]. The goal of the game is to use the tools provided to reverse engineer the given electronic device. If you sit and think for a second it is quite easy to figure out. I beat it in less than 30min. But it was well worth the download. It has the look of an older game and that I also like. So have fun and dont blow your self up playing it [You will see what I mean ;) ]

HackADay’s post

[Zach Barth] has released Ruckingenur II, the game of reverse engineering. The latest in his Games for Engineers series, it is a full game with multiple levels and live action cut scenes. Set with a military theme, the goal is to reverse engineer enemy items. Pictured above is a lock to a weapons cache.

The pixelized style is consistent throughout. Even the cut scenes have the effect. The reverse engineering is fun enough to keep you interested while you learn. There is an in game help system that keeps you on track as well. Our only suggestion is that he get some better costumes next time!
