When I built my computer I failed to put good thermal compound on the processor. On top of that I did it wrong and as a result for the past couple weeks while my house has been a bit hotter than normal my computer was shutting off due to overheating. I was hitting 119C. Well I am going to explain right now the best way to put thermal compound on a processor [or atleast the method that worked for me this time]
Things you will need
99% Isopropyl Alcohol [I used 91% but 99% is recommended]
Cotton Swabs
Lint free cloth
Tube of Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Silver Ceramique [What I used]
Time
Now the first 3 things you don’t HAVE to use if its a brand new processor but might as well do it right anyway.
The steps..
Clean the processor / heatsink by dipping the cotton swab in the Isopropyl
Seat the processor in the motherboard
Put a VERY SMALL amount [about 3/4 the size of a BB or 2 grains of rice] in the center of the processor
DO NOT SPREAD IT AROUND
Attach the heatsink to the motherboard
Turn the computer on and monitor the temps very closely for the first few hours.
Turn the pc off every evening to allow the compound to cool off and then heat up once it is turned back on [break in period] for about a week.
Thats it should be good to go.
Following those directions I got my processor to go from 119C to 50C [lower when the house is cooler]
Ok guys got a favor to ask of you. I am in need of a Analog Trunk Scanner for my local news site so I can keep up with what the police / fire departments are doing. Now here is the problem. These thigns are expensive. So I am on the hunt for someone who has one already that is willing to either sell extremely cheap or donate. If you have something like this please get in contact with me.
Since gmail came out it was beta. Along with many other google apps. Well now Gmail beta is no more! Thats right Gmail is out of the beta stage.
The reasion [from what I can see] behind this is within this quote from a google exec
“I’ve had C.I.O.’s tell me that they would not consider a product labeled ‘beta.’”
So they are wanting a bigger chunk of the online market and when people wont use the service becuase its beta that is something that has to be changed.
In any event you should not see any other difference with the services other than there is no beta lable on them.
Ok so I bought a Belkin Tunecast FM 2 a while back and to be honest it sucked. I made a youtube video with a way to make it less suckish but it still sucked.
The Belkin cost me $25~ plus a couple hours to mod it. Now the problem is depending on the weather the thing works great. However 90% of the time you will end up with static bad audio quality low bass and you have to mess with it on long trips to stay off of other radio stations.
On the flip side I went and got a Cassette to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter and hooked it up and it worked great! [Aside from a few minor things]
Some of the issues with this is that if you turn the volume up on either the radio or the ipod to much the audio will get distorted but once you find that sweet spot you are good to go! Bass response is great when I hooked it up with my iPhone. Other than my car attempting to switch sides on the tape a few times in my 1 and a half hour trip it worked great.
So to sum it up… If you are looking to get something that can play your ipod in your car and have a cassette player. Go with that for around $10 [from walmart]
If your car does not have a cassette player and has a CD player I suggest going the more expensive route and getting a ipod adapter for your head unit because to be honest the FM transmitters suck major ass.
