Jumbo DS Mod

Well I was actually going to post this last night, but I didn’t get around to it. So when I look to buy a new product the first thing I always do is look for creative mods and hacks. For this particular find I was looking into some DSi hacks. While I have found a few PoC Videos (Proof of Concept) and a few flash carts I have yet to see any real progress as of yet to make me want one of these instead of just working with my normal DS. So as I was trolling through youtube looking at some PoC’s I found this. A DS that has been modded to play on two tablet screens! Apparently there is quite a lot of hardware hacking in this, its not so simple that you could just go buy a touch screen and go to town on it. This was really just something that interested me and I would really love to try, but with this recession I really can’t afford it. In any case its pretty interesting to watch.

EDIT: Just a thought but let me break down the cost that he estimates it would be to make this again and this is a direct quote:

“Parts and approximate cost (you can do better scrounging for stuff on eBay):

Gateway M275 screens (14″ 1024×768): $100*2 (eBay)
LVDS modules (Advantech PCM-205): $60*2
Digilent S3BOARD + headers: $130
Nintendo DS: $100
Wacom pen: $30

Grand total: $580 (let’s make it an even $600 for any other miscellaneous junk). However, _MOST_ of these things were spare parts I had laying around from earlier projects, so it didn’t cost me anywhere near that much. I wouldn’t have bothered if it did.”

There you have it, now I know I can’t afford it! Dammit its just so cool!

Military thinks about thinking {Mind hacking}

think

So I was surfing My usual news blogs looking for news to post when I stumbled upon this interesting article over at Gizmodo (<3). Basically It says that the U.S Government is thinking about using telepathy to communicate between soldiers. Now I can think of some good pros and some very bad cons for this idea.

Pro’s
1. Better Covert op’s
Now our seals can talk to each other without making a sound. They can instantly send warnings if they are caught and make status updates to others.
2. Visuals? The article doesn’t really specify how this will all work but what if you could send visual images back to each other? No need for a damn camera anymore. The less our soldiers have to carry the better right?
3.Spy check
I know that sounds like something from Team Fortress 2 but hey If you can’t control what your thinking then it would be easy to tell if someone is a traitor.

Con’s
1. How will this send info wireless?
Its a good idea to think about this for many reasons, Jamming, Listening in, and possibly corruption. How bad would it be if you thought you were hearing your buddy’s thoughts and actually you were hearing just what the enemy wanted you to hear?
2. Visuals?
Again if there are visuals it could be traumatizing if you see your buddy die and think its actually you.
3. Its not happening for a long long time.
This is defiantly complicated tech and its not going to be realized for who knows how long.

Well I at least hope to see some of this in my lifetime but that is quite doubtful.

New Windows Commercial Just As lame As First One.

image

This is just sad. Really Microsoft making Bill Gates do a stupid Dance is not funny. If you could please make a commercial that had some meaning in it and showed progress instead of retarded-ness then maybe people would buy your products without feeling like they are going to be hung out to dry. Here is a link to Windows Commercial 2

and the first one is Here

It’s ComCrap not Comcast [Crappy ISP’s]

monkeycast

Well today is the day I finally write a review on my own ISP. If you haven’t already guessed I have ComCast, OR as I like to call them ComCrap. Why do you ask that I call them by such a name? Simple Really, the atrocious thing they call internet service is why I have given them such a nickname. First off lets start from the beginning. My first internet connection was dial-up, like most people I couldn’t stand it. Unfortunately the area I live in is quite rural so I didn’t have much choice. Well about a year and a half ago that changed. ComCast suddenly supported our area. I was thrilled that I could now fully enjoy the internet. MAN WAS I WRONG! From the very beginning there were problems. First off I wasn’t home when they installed it and a family member who knew nothing about technical equipment was there. So when I arrived home I was greeted with a monstrosity of a cable running through trees over from the telephone poll to my house. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU RUN WIRES THROUGH TREE’S? It was thee most half-assed job I’d ever seen, and I once worked for a cabling company. The run was probably just over 50 yards and ran through about 3 trees over to the roof of my house. This bullshit took them 2 weeks to fix. Mean while my internet service was comparable to just about double dial-up speed, And at the time I was paying for 4mbps. What the hell was wrong I didst have a clue, but all of a sudden after 4 calls and no success in getting it fixed, I worked fine. I was awed by the blazing speed, It was almost beautiful. I say almost because it didn’t last long. I woke up one morning to only 1 flashing light on my modem, compared to the 4 solid ones that I should have had. Well I was on the phone again. They said there was an outage in our area and it would be fixed shortly. 4 days later it finally got fixed. Then everything was great, for another 3 weeks. We had a lil storm here in Florida, and that’s something we have quite often. Unfortunately that somehow knocked out the internet. So they sent out another tech to come look at the lines outside, I don’t know what he did but he was there and then he was gone and the internet still wasn’t fixed. So I left and went to another house to use the internet. Later I got a call from someone at the house and this is what they told me, “Yeah some guy from comcast just came in and the internet works, He says that someone put a filter on the line so it wouldn’t have internet”. I was shocked, seeing as we don’t have cable T.V. service, why they would do that? But after that it worked good for about 5 weeks then our service kept dropping and then going out for no reason at all. Back to the phone I went and they sent out a tech. He found nothing wrong on the outside, or inside and then he left. Guess what? He didn’t fix anything and so the problem kept happening. Eventually I called again and they sent out another tech, same thing happened. Guess what? Still no fix for the problem, I called 3 more times and had 3 more techs come visit for no reason at all. Finally the problem just went away. After that my service was pretty good for a few days then it would have a bad day. So I just dealt with it. Now for the past 3 months my service has been so horrible im actually thinking of going back to dial-up. Here’s the deal, EVERY 2 HOURS THE CONNECTION GETS FUCKED UP! and by fucked up I mean I can only visit cretin sites, sometimes its only google that I can’t reach, or sometimes it’s all of them. On top of that my Ping to any server is 100ms At Least. Even though im now paying for 6mbps. And the same tech thing that happened earlier has happened again, except this time it was just sad. The tech’s they sent out didn’t even know what ping was! I know what the problem is, the node for my area is overloaded. So I decided to call ComCast again today and here is what happened.

DW: Umm… Hi So my connection is crap and my ping to your own servers is 197ms with a packet loss of 50%.

Comcast: Ok?

DW: Errr… I know that the node in my area is overloaded and either needs an upgrade or we need a new one.

Comcast: We can’t come out to your house and give you a node just for you.

DW: Look I don’t need a node just for me I need a node for my area.

Comcast: We can’t do that, If you like I can Transfer you to the right Department to cancel your service, Or you can upgrade your service to faster speeds.

DW: What? Why would I upgrade MY service if im already not getting what im paying for?

Comcast: Well I can sent a tech out.

DW: So he can tell me he can’t fix the problem?

Comcast: That’s all I can do besides transfer you to the right place to cancel your service.

DW: So your going to just let me have crap service?

Comcast: Well I can transfer you to cancel your service.

DW: Nope that’s fine I’m going to use it first to tell the world about your crappy service.

Comcast:Well…

At that point I hung up. I’m Sick and Tired of this crap. ComCast is an evil Company that Should be shut down. I hope others share their stories and write ton’s of blogs and twitters and what ever they have to do so that ComCast will see that they need to change business stratiges. So If you have a choice of ISP’s remember: DO NOT EVER CHOOSE COMCAST. And why? Well this image says it all:

Wii Dual NAND Flash hack [Wii Hack]

image

So this isn’t new to most hard core mod chippers out there. This might be new to the suddenly blooming homebrew community though and that’s why im posting about it. What is this though? Well this is for extreme Wii hacks only. It is basically a way to backup your Wii so if you fuck up the NAND you can always keep a spare so-to speak. I myself probably wouldn’t do this right now as im not a Wii Dev. But for any Dev.s out there this is a great thing to have.

Microsoft Pushing Vista Harder [Why even try?]

image

So apparently Microsoft thinks Vista has a bad rep. Well who’d a thought that if you make a bad product after delays and promises, and then cut out features, add low compatibility and a shit load of bugs and a outrageous price tag that people would give said product a bad rep. Not to mention the highly effective anti-windows campaign that apple ran. You might expect low sales if all that happens. And then if screw over other customers who legitimately buy this said product, word will get around pretty fast that it sucks. Personally slow transfer rates and things that are still not fixed like the registry and stupid questions that can stop entire transfers over one tiny file is pretty lame. None the less Microsoft has decided it will send out people to try and convert people to vista users through stores like bestbuy and circuit city. If they didnt have enough brain washed helpers who don’t know how to do anything quickly or without adding a ton of bullshit. Well im glad the CompUSA in my area opened up again, they at least know I don’t absolutely have to have virus software installed buy a professional button pushing monkey.

[Trackers addon: The transfer rates on vista are not that bad 😉 Better than xp imo!]

Google Chrome the Newest Browser added to the cluster.

pic
So in the browser wars (also known as the cluster fuck wars) a new contender readies itself to step up to the plate. I will give you two reasons that it will be popular for at least the first 2 weeks. One its a Google product, even if it sucked –and it won’t– people would still have to try it for themselves before they believe any of the blogs and other reviews. Two it has a beta test. Everyone and their grandma will want to be in on this beta, especially now that the blogs are talking about it. But does that mean it will be bad? Hell no it doesn’t. Lets take a minute to talk about this browser “concept”. It runs in tabs but the tabs are all independent processes. This can be good and bad depending on how they do it. It is good because now when one page loads an bad piece of code and crashes then I don’t lose all my damn work. However does this now mean that if i have 50 tabs open im gonna have 50 processes!? that might slow down my pc a bit. Especially seeing as I usually have more than 50 open. But until we get the beta tomorrow we won’t know. I however am very excited about Google is sticking its foot in the race. This means that Microsoft will put even more effort into IE8. Not that i can ever go back to using it all the time but it would be nice if they made it faster and at least tried to compete. This also brings up another puzzling thing. Google just signed another 3 year agreement with Mozilla and its Browser (my personal favorite) Firefox. What does this mean? Isn’t it kinda like cheating on your girlfriend? Well only time will tell. My guess is that Mozilla will release a statement saying they are going to embrace Chrome and try and integrate some of its features, Mozilla will most likely want to keep the relationship with Google strong, but it is still confusing.
