Unetbootin – Any USB or Memory card as a bootable device!

Ok this is a GREAT program. It allows you to turn any iso into a bootable image on a usb stick or sd card. So you can throw your linux iso on it and use that to install it on your eeepc πŸ˜‰

There are some operating systems that you can select from and it will download it and put it all on your usb drive with a few clicks of your mouse. It is from what I can see flawless. I have used it to test out backtrack3 on my eeepc as well as centos. So if you are curious about testing something like this out what better time than the present?

Best part. Its free!!!

As another year is coming to a close lets look at some highlights.

As this year comes to a closewe [myself and Dark] Will be doing a best fo 2008 post. We did this back in the beginning of this year and I am just going to re-post that so you can get an idea of whats changed πŸ™‚

Also in this new year there will be some changes to themodshop and how things are run. Look for them starting soon. I will ofcorse keep everyone updated on the status.

So here is a look back. On the best of 2007 post that we did.

Well as another year passes we thought that we should write up a review on the best of 07. This is a list of things me [Tracker] and Dark thought were the best in there category.

With that being said click the Read More link to read the top’s of 07.

More commonly known as Asus this company got the overall best for hardware equipment. Reasons for this are they are one of the leading OEM company’s out there. They also have the cheapest UMPC The Asus EeePc =D

I chose Engadget for their constantly updated site. They are always up-to-date about everything.

For a modder, this is especially important. I need to know when new things are happening so I can brain storm

on ideas, Ya sure its better to have one taken apart first but eh, you still need ideas. πŸ˜‰

Well WordPress was a clear cut choice for this because it is the most widely used blogging program out there. It has tons of addons and themes. It is also extremely easy to setup and manage. WordPress is what we use for our blog =D

vBulletin is a professional, affordable community forum solution. This is used by many websites from multi million dollar company’s to less than 100 dollar company’s. It has a wide range of addons and scripts as well as themes.

Mozilla, they have done a terrific job with firefox and thunderbird, bringing the people one step closer to

security and away from relying on Microsoft for for everything. Now why is firefox so important to modders ?

Because of all the cool extensions we can add, πŸ˜€ with a small google search you can custom up firefox in very little time.

  • Best software company:

Well we were not really able to give this to anyone as no software company did really good, Some honorable mentions could be Adobe (with CS3) and a few others, but me [Dark] and Tracker found that we are not really using any new software.

We have selected this as the best device because of its ease of use and capabilities. Sure it can play games but it is also able to play music movies browse the web and you can even view your por….err…pictures on it right out of the box. It gets even better when you enable homebrew on it and are able to do alot more with free homebrew Sony PS3 Emulator apps. It also comes in quite handy with XBMC (Xbox Media Center)

Well this wins hands down. Why? Well there are a few, first of all it has been fully and completely hacked to run homebew.

Second even before that it has so many mods our there its crazy. Third, this was the most widely modded console when it came to case mods. Fourth, It has a reasonable price tag! The PS3 and XBOX 360 are overpriced and honestly there are not to many games that are good.

Logitech has made many accessories for the computer as well as other products. They have also made great gaming devices such as the logitech G5 Gaming mouse. They make great speakers for every budget. They also have a great warranty policy. that is if you even have a problem with a product of theres.

Why is this on our list? Well if you hop over to ipodwizard.net you will find all sorts of mods for the ipod, I [Dark]
personally mod my ipod all the time, and at this time almost all of the ipods are moddable, (but the newer ones have yet to be unlocked) I have made my ipod truly mine and there is no other PMP on the market that i can run 3 different Firmwares πŸ˜‰

If you like computers or anything tech-like , you love this store. Why? Well simply because they don’t jerk you around like Best buy, and they have almost everything you could ever want for a PC! And as an added bonus the tech guys actually know what the hell your talking about :D.

Ok so here is the senario. You want a new computer but dont want to spend the money for a name brand…or maybe you do but you dont want to goto walmart and get a pc from there. So what do you do? You goto NewEgg. Newegg has gotten the choice for best online store for there great customer support wide selection of products as well as hella fast shipping. 3days standard. My item shipped and got here the next day =D.

Why did we name two OS’s for Number 1? Well for starters both of these OS’s made a name for themselves in 2007.

Apples previously unknown OS was made big with Vistas down fall, and to be true, Both me [Dark] and Tracker really want a mac, Especially the mac mini. OSX is all about simplicity and User friendly, its packed with great software, and the best part? NO TRIAL WARE! so i can get up and go.

Unbuntu really made linux’s popularity skyrocket, and the fact that its now bundled on Dells means major headway for linux. If you dont like linux then you must not like Modding, its really the ultimate thing to do if you want to create a home server. πŸ˜‰

Acer has won this spot by providing computers that are actually decent. Compared to dell Toshiba hp and all the others I have seen acer computers last longer and run better than any other “Name Brand” computer. Although I prefer custom built if I was to buy a name brand desktop it would probably be a Acer computer.

Ok so this is my pick of the year. Linksys has gotten my admin choice because of there wide range of products and there well known name. It also helps that they are apart of Cisco Systems *Major commercial networking product manufacturer* There products are affordable as well as functional and because they use open source for there firmware they are upgradeable to a custom one with no problems =D DD-WRT FTW!!!! Now to go along with my statement there products actuially do work for more than a month unlike some other company’s out there *cough*belkin*cough*.

Why Google you ask? Well its a modders best friend. πŸ™‚ If you have an idea and you want to do research on that mod you Google it. If you want to know how to spell something but have no word processor, you can Google it. Youtube, and Google video are irreplaceable tools for modding, because sometimes you just dont get what some people write down. No matter what you want google has a solution. On top of that Microsoft copy’s everything they do πŸ˜‰ So they must be doing something right. πŸ˜€

Google is the new kid on the block and trust me he’s gonna roll some heads.

And this concludes our best of 07. Rember these are what we *the admins* think are the best out there. Post your opnions about this and share your own review. If you have any problems PM Tracker or Dark on the forums.

Thanks

TheModShop

Hope this brings back memories for some of you readers out there.

T-Mobile G1 Has Multi Touch! – Take that iPhone!

VIDEO NOT FOUND

Take a look at the above video. Notice anything that you cant do on your g1 or a friends g1? Thats right. Multi touch. Apparently google did not feel this was a feature that you should be able to have although it is supported by the hardware they just did not take advantage of it. So the great coder in the video above has shown a proof of concept and is working to prefect the multi touch capabilities of the G1. Take that you iPhone lovers!

I is getting new phone! [ebay ftw]

Ok so I have been in Kentucky for almost a year now. And right before we moved up here we switched to Verizon. BIG mistake. Turns out that verizon has no service in Kentucky. So for the past almost year we have had no data coverage. No picture messages. And my poor treo was not able to recieve email. So I finally got tired of it and decided I was switching. After looking around a bit there are 3 main providers in my area. [AT&T/cingular, Sprint, BlueGrass and T-Mobile]. Well if you have ever read themodshop you know that I HATE AT&T so they were out. Bluegrass I have never used. Some of the pluses of it would be no contacts and decent prices. However its only available in specific areas in Kentucky. Meaning if I ever go out of town then I am screwed. So they are out. My sister had sprint and said they were ok so that was a possibility however due to me not wanting to sign a contract I wanted to avoid them. That only leaves t-mobile. They have this nice plan called FlexPay. It offers the same pricing as a contract plan but. With out the contracts so there is the great thing. However the phones are crazy expensive. The phone that I wanted would have costed near $500 for the first month. So thanks to the powers of ebay I bought a unlocked phone for way less than retail. Sure its meant for Cingular/at&t. But being unlocked it will work with t-mobile. Now then there is the problem of the sim card. I called up t-mobile and it turns out a little bit of time a trip down to my local t-mobile store and $19.99 I can get a sim card. So all systems are a go I am getting t-mobile. What is the moral of this entire post.

1. Verizon sucks

2. Ebay rocks

3. I am 1337

the phone I got is the HTC 8125 the auction [HERE]. Paying $122.50. A bit more than I had wanted to spend but I think it will be well worth it.

Its features include

  • Touch screen
  • Wifi
  • Bluetooth
  • 1.3 mega pixel camera
  • slide out keyboard
  • 128mb of on board storage
  • 200mhz processor
  • 64mb sd ram [wait this thing is more powerful than my first computer was. And almost more storage space]
  • Windows Mobile 6

Not a bad line up. Throw skype on it and you have a decent wifi phone to! [thats why I made sure to get one with wifi!]

Sorry guys I wish I could buy and review new phones [like the g1 or htc touch] But they are not in my price range for a free based blog. However if anyone out there wants to send me some products to review ide be happy to do so! Probably wont get any offers but hey if I do thats great! Email: tracker[at]themodshop[dot]net

[I have gotten products to review before. Such as vps servers and dedicated servers so on and so forth but no physical items. Go figure]

New Macbook? New LCD? Who the hell knows?

Ok there has been a ton of posts showing the supposed $899 mac book update. And other stuff. Well it looks like it might be a lcd or a new iphone or a pile of crap from Jobs himself. No one really knows! Guess we will find out tomarrow at the apple event. Lets hope its not a pile of crap. Anyway. I figured since everyone else was posting about apple news I might as well make a post of my own πŸ˜›

Best Firefox addons!

Ok so I figured it was time to post what I think is the best firefox addons. So here is my list of [what I think is] the best firefox addons.

Better Youtube. This addon adds stuff like a download button to youtube videos.

FireShot. Now this one I use all the time. Click a button and get a screen shot of the website you are on.

iMacros. Ever have to do the same thing over and over and over and over? Use iMacros to do it faster [and easier]

Palette Grabber. This one is great for all you website/gfx designers if you want to figure out one of the colors on a website.

Speed Dial. Opera has something like this built in. But for FireFox does not. This adds a set of websites to your homepage with previews of each site.

Tamper Data. This is just fun to mess around with. If you feel like doin a little cookie editing you can get the highest score ever on flash tetris πŸ˜€

TwitterFox. Do you use twitter? Twitter fox will show all your updates and let you post them from the bottom of your firefox. Soooo much better than goin to the website all the time.

So. That is the addons I have [and love] What are some of your favorite addons?

Touch with out touching!…ummm…right :P

Came across this and thought I would share. Its called Touchless and its from Microsoft. Its opensource [ya I know never thought Microsoft and open source would mix either]

Touchless enables touch without touching by using a webcam to track color based markers.

This project is an Office Labs community project, which means a Microsoft employee worked on this in their spare time. It is also an open source project, which means that anyone can view, use, and contribute to the code.

Looks kool. I have not had a chance to test it out tho. As soon as I find some kind of yellow tennis ball or something I will have to try it out πŸ˜€
